Shaping Future Builders with American Builders Merit Badge Day
Overhead Door Company of Atlanta’s Mark Weihe volunteered with American Builders 2017 to host a Surveying Merit Badge class for the Boy Scouts of America in the Atlanta Area Council.
American Builders 2017 is working on the new Sun Trust Park which is under construction for the Atlanta Braves baseball team.
Mark is an estimator for Overhead Door Company of Atlanta and has been with the company since 1997.
Mark was in new construction commercial sales until 2009 and is now responsible for architectural
approval drawings for commercial and residential door projects.
His involvement in the Merit Badge Day was significant, as he created the visual aids from which the
Scouts worked to understand three main premises in surveying and provided the Scoutmasters with the
solutions to help them check each Scout’s handiwork.
Scouts had to record the data in a provided field book and then produce a scaled drawing illustrating their findings. The data collected had to close, or prove to be a closed circuit that was mathematically correct within 5 inches. The day was a success as everyone closed their circuits to within 1/32 of an inch! All the participants also received their own hard hat to keep.
Doing community service with the Boy Scouts has long been a passion of mine. To help and
influence young men to succeed in their Scouting careers is lots of fun. Doing it with the backing of DH Pace has been the icing on the top of the cake and has been very rewarding to me personally. Rubbing shoulders with a Sr. Superintendent Forrest Brewer, Sr. Project Manager Doug Stiles and several of their highly talented Field Engineers who were taking time out from building an iconic new stadium was a thrill to say the least.
